UPDATE 02/05/09: THE STATE BUDGET SHORTFALL OF $2.3 BILLION MAY ELIMINATE THE GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL FOR THE NEAR FUTURE
.
The State of PA offers rising juniors and seniors in Pennsylvania a unique opportunity to attend the PA Governor's School of Excellence in your field of interest.
This is a very competitive and prestigious selection and many top universities are aware of this unique honor for those who qualify. These schools are 5 week programs hosted at various university campuses in Pennsylvania. Attendance to these are free of cost for all 5 weeks of stay at the campuses. The only costs you incur are the travel costs to the campus.
Some of the campuses are Univ of Pittsburgh for Health Care and International Studies,
Carnegie Mellon for Sciences, Penn State for Ag Sciences and Education etc.
Visit the website http://www.pgse.org/ for more detailed information about this program and how to apply.
Remember this is like a college application and you will need your PSAT scores, transcripts and recommendations in additions to essays. The application deadlines vary by school but start in January. The applications can be downloaded from the website now so get started. Also a large piece of the school endorsement comes from your guidance counselors so give them what they need as early as possible (which means "now"). They will be very busy in December with the seniors applying to college so you need to talk to them right away.
Going through this process is a great rehearsal for what you can expect in the next year. Besides everyone I know that has attended has had the most memorable 5 weeks in these programs. Good Luck,
